On arriving in New York in 1978 it was obvious that I could not continue making the very expensive and short-lived polyurethane constructions that were made in South Africa during the 1970's. On visiting Pearl Paint on Canal Street I came across their display of paints made by about ten manufacturers from all over the globe. This triggered the idea to make a series of paintings in which the same color from six different manufacturers were painted next to each other. This raised the question,"How similar or different would each color be, and how would each addition appear in contrast to the previous years after one, a hundred, or a thousand years?"
